How Daleville Community Schools Retired Its Lorex NVRs Without Replacing a Camera

Great Cameras, Held Back by the NVRs Behind Them

Daleville Community Schools serves around 1,000 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in Indiana, spread across an elementary school and a junior-senior high school. To keep those buildings safe, the district runs more than 100 security cameras, used by more than 20 regular users.

For years those cameras — Lorex 4K models — fed conventional Lorex Network Video Recorders. The IT team personally oversaw multiple NVRs and continually expanded storage to meet retention requirements. The cameras produced high-quality video; the system around them did not hold up.

Remote access was cumbersome and limited to a few administrators, live feeds required someone onsite, and remote video quality was significantly degraded. Sharing an incident clip meant manual server access and an upload to Google Drive. With limited IT staff, managing several NVRs across locations meant manually maintaining data retention, firewall configuration, and VPN access — and enabling remote access at all meant port forwarding and firewall adjustments that introduced cybersecurity risks.

The 15-20 users who cared about different camera feeds could not build their own video walls, and the outdated NVR interface made even downloading and sharing video harder than it needed to be.

Same Cameras, New Platform, Live in Under an Hour

When Daleville looked for a way out, Coram’s ease of onboarding set it apart. The district kept its Lorex 4K cameras and switched the software behind them in under an hour, with no changes to the firewall or network infrastructure and no call to its external IT support. “Coram AI stood out for its ease of onboarding,” said Adam Jones, the IT technical lead at Daleville. “Getting more than 100 cameras up and running in under an hour was seamless.”

Countless Hours Back, and a System Anyone Can Use

The biggest gain was time. Keeping the cameras the district already owned meant no camera replacement, and leaving the Lorex NVRs behind meant no more overseeing recorders and expanding their storage to meet retention requirements. The interface asked nothing of its users, either. “As long as people have been on the internet in the past 20 years, they will just know how to use the Coram AI system,” Jones said.

Performance held up under real use, too. Even with multiple users on the system at once, Coram maintains real-time performance and high-quality video feeds. “At any point, there are 10-15 users accessing the Coram AI system, in near real-time,” Jones noted. “At least 15 people are looking at 20 different cameras at a time.”

• Supporting many viewers at once: Real-time performance and high-quality feeds hold up with 10-15 users on the system.

For a district with limited IT staff, the upgrade delivered what the Lorex setup could not: improved security, ease of use, and operational efficiency — on the same 4K cameras Daleville already had.
