SALTO's core technology is SALTO Virtual Network (SVN), which stores access rights on an encrypted RFID card instead of wiring every door to a central panel. Cards get updated at an SVN reader anywhere in the building, and the battery-powered locks read and update that data each time a card is presented.

The caveat is that SALTO's locks run on its own communication standard, so keeping a SALTO system future-proof usually means staying inside SALTO's hardware line rather than adding other vendors' hardware as your needs change.
