Hooke Labs needed security it could trust, without gaps or guesswork. After moving into a newly purchased building, the team adopted Coram to replace a patchwork of consumer-grade systems that missed hours of footage.

Before Coram (Challenge)

The old setup (Ring, Frigate and Home Assistant) was unreliable. Streams dropped, footage vanished, and basic reviews were slow. Mattie also needed better evidence: when graffiti and illegal dumping hit the new property, police said license plates would have enabled action, but the cameras couldn’t capture them. Internally, the lab wanted to deter theft and monitor animal rooms,  while tracking who arrives, leaves, and returns.

The Switch to Coram

A trusted integrator recommended Coram first, and it stuck. Hooke Labs considered other vendors but disliked “middlemen” models and opted to work directly with the product company. “It was like… you sort of opened a window to this whole other portal of stuff that you can do… a real glimpse into the future,” Mattie said.

Life With Coram (Results)

Coram’s AI search was the immediate unlock. “The ability to search for things just using text, and then the goshdarn thing shows up. It’s wild,” Mattie said. Make/model searches for vehicles, attribute lookups, and rapid filtering replaced hours of manual scrubbing.

Playback now keeps pace with investigations. Buffering and zoom are “really fast,” enabling Hooke Labs to jump to the right second instead of waiting through 30-second blocks. Reliability has improved as well, so the team can trust footage to be there, addressing the core failure of their old DIY stack.

Before → After

  • Dropped streams, missing footageReliable capture that the team can depend on.
  • Slow, clunky playbackFast buffering and precise zoom for second-by-second review.
  • Manual lookupsAI text and vehicle-make search to surface moments instantly.

Why Coram?

  • AI search that works (text queries, vehicle makes) reduces time to evidence.
  • Fast playback/zoom streamlines daily reviews.
  • Reliability replaces DIY gaps and lost footage.
  • Direct vendor relationship vs. reseller layers.
  • People and product: “Fantastic product and the people have all been great.”

What’s Next?

To capture plates at ~300 ft, Hooke Labs is adding 25x PTZs and exploring expansions across multiple U.S. sites. The team is also assessing workflow ideas like camera-based sign-in verification and alarm automations based on recognized personnel.

Recommendation

Asked whether he’d recommend Coram, Mattie didn’t hesitate: “A million percent… I would absolutely recommend it.”
